Ecuadorian Amazon, the Origins of Cocoa
Before the Aztecs named it “the drink of the gods,” cocoa was domesticated in the Ecuadorian Amazon 5000 years ago by the Mayo-Chinchipe culture.
“First Societies of the High Amazon” is one of the publications of Ecuadorian archaeologist Francisco Valdez reporting the results of his research in Palanda, where the oldest cocoa beans and references to it have been found.
Keep this place in mind everytime you eat chocolate.
Guayaquil, how the world got to know chocolate and Cacao Arriba got its name
Cacao Arriba
The story goes that Guayaquil, being a port city, when people asked where the cocoa came from, the port workers answered that it came ‘UP RIVER’. At the time all the cocoa came from the Daule and Babahoyo tributaries of the Guayas River. Hence the famous name of ‘Cacao Arriba’.
1789 the year Cocoa reached the world
Though ever since the Conquista Cocoa had been known by Europeans, it wasn’t until 1789 that cacao began to be exported for the first time from Guayaquil. The same city where we produce our fine premium chocolates today.
Fino de Aroma
Ecuadorian Cacao is denominated Fino de Aroma, meaning Fine Aroma and Flavour for which we are recognized worldwide. The quality of our chocolate starts with the study and rescue of ancestral methods of planting, harvesting, drying, and fermentation which are then used in the farms we work with.
